Welcome to the home of PA Babe Ruth!
The 2019 Spring season is upon us, and leagues are starting to prepare for registration. The board of directors recently met and should be posting rule updates soon.
From the Commissioner
Thank you for visiting the official website for PA Babe Ruth. We are part of a broader program of Babe Ruth entities here in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including the Cal Ripken League, Babe Ruth Softball and Babe Ruth Baseball. Falling under our national organization, Babe Ruth League, our purpose is to promote the game of baseball and softball among our youth. As a father of two, a son who played in the Cal Ripken division and now in Babe Ruth, as well as a daughter playing Babe Ruth Softball, I get to see first hand the impact we can make on our children in the community.
One of the more fulfilling experiences I've had is coaching. Watching those young players get better and better over time is a good feeling. Even more, getting to see those young kids continue to play as they got older is rewarding knowing that I may have had a small part of their growth and love of the game. It is to that end that I challenge you, the parent, to get involved. Become a coach. If you're nervous about inexperience, start out as an assistant until you become comfortable. If you are unable to coach for whatever reason, get involved in other ways, like helping prep the fields, work in the snack stand, join the fundraising committee, or even just spread the word of what we offer. The more kids we can impact, the better we are doing at achieving our goal. SHARE THE GAME - SHARE THE DREAM!
PILOT PROGRAM FOR 2019
Babe Ruth League instituted a new policy for 14U and up, eliminating the boundary requirements for those age groups. However, we are also seeing a transition at the younger ages and want to understand the impact to leagues in the state. We have learned that some leagues need to go outside of their traditional boundary just to field a team, forcing that league to abandon Babe Ruth for a less restrictive independent travel schedule. To this end...
Effective for the 2019 season, PA Babe Ruth Softball programs in the 8U/10U/12U age division may compete under the following two (2) categories:
Rec All-Star Team
- The tournament team will be comprised of a recommended twelve (12), maximum of fifteen (15), players all within the established league boundaries, following the traditional league boundary expectations.
Babe Ruth Travel Team
- The tournament team will be comprised of the recommended twelve (12), maximum of fifteen (15), players with no more than four (4) players from outside the established league boundaries, within a 20 mile driving distance of the boundary line.
- Leagues may designate their Rec All-Star Team as Babe Ruth Travel even if they meet the above standards, should they wish to compete in that category. However, the reverse does not hold true.
The PA Babe Ruth State Tournament will have two brackets of play. One for each of the above designated categories. Winners of each bracket will earn a bid to the World Series in Jensen Beach, FL in 2019, as Pennsylvania is a pre-qualifier. However, for 2019, only the Rec All-Star Team category will move forward to the Middle Atlantic Regional Tournament. This may be revisited at a later date.
Should a category not have enough teams, the two brackets may merge to participate in the same bracket for tournament play, at the discretion of the state commissioner. Regardless, there will still be a Rec All-Star and Babe Ruth Travel champion designated.
Additionally, PA Babe Ruth Softball will incorporate a Diamond Bracket into the tournament for 2019. The Diamond Bracket will be comprised of the lower portion of seeding after pool play, or after the double-elimination round, depending on which method is used.
